Preserving History, Ensuring Safety
New England is famous for its beautiful, centuries-old homes. However, behind the stunning plaster and woodwork often lies a hidden danger: antique Knob and Tube (K&T) wiring. Installed between the 1880s and 1940s, this system used ceramic knobs to suspend individual uninsulated wires inside wall cavities. While a marvel of its time, it was never designed to handle the electrical loads of modern appliances, computers, and HVAC systems.
The Dangers of Outdated Wiring
Knob and tube wiring lacks a ground wire, meaning any fault will immediately shock a user or spark a fire rather than safely tripping a breaker. Furthermore, the cloth and rubber insulation degrades over decades, crumbling away and leaving bare copper exposed in your walls. Because of these extreme fire hazards, most major insurance companies will flat-out refuse to insure a home until the K&T wiring is completely removed and replaced.
The Casale Restoration Approach
Rewiring a historic home requires an artisan's touch. Casale Electric specializes in "surgical" rewiring. We map out the circuits and use advanced fish-tape techniques to snake modern Romex wire through tight wall cavities, minimizing the need to cut into your irreplaceable horsehair plaster and ornate trim. We bring your home up to the strictest modern safety standards while completely preserving its historic charm and architectural integrity.
Knob & Tube vs. Modern Romex
Old Knob & Tube ❌
- - No Ground Wire (Shock hazard)
- - Degrading cloth/rubber insulation
- - Incompatible with attic insulation (Fire hazard)
- - Uninsurable by most modern home insurers
Modern Romex (NM-B) ✅
- - Dedicated bare copper Ground Wire
- - Durable, heat-resistant PVC sheathing
- - 100% safe to bury in thermal insulation
- - Fully compliant with the 2023 NEC

Speak to an Engineer: 508-699-6245Service FAQ
Will you have to tear down my walls?
No. We specialize in 'fishing' wires. While small access holes are sometimes necessary, we make every effort to minimize impact to historic plaster.
Can I leave knob-and-tube in the walls if it's disconnected?
Yes, once physically severed from the panel, the old wire is harmless and can be abandoned in place to save your walls.
Do insurance companies require this?
Yes, most insurers in MA and RI will not underwrite a policy—or will charge massive premiums—if active knob-and-tube is present.
